I also know first hand what it’s like to have a business that technically “works”— but is no longer working for you.

My Story

Here’s a random fact for you: before I was a Clarity Coach I was a jewellery designer.

Kinda cool, right? For a long time, I thought so too. I used my creativity to dream up gorgeous, eye-catching pieces that my customers went ga-ga for. Did fancy things like hire models for photoshoots and host collection launch parties. I was in FASH-UN for god’s sake. And for a long time, I loved what I did. But then one day I was struck by the realization that my growing business was no longer working for me.

"I want you to take a few minutes and write down all of the things you love about your business."

I was seated in a boardroom alongside a dozen other business owners, and that morning's workshop leader had just given us these instructions. I watched as the other women bent over their notebooks and began writing furiously, and after giving them a sideways glance or two, I hunkered down over my own blank page.

What do I love about my business? I pondered.

I wrote down a few things: I love designing new pieces. I love my customers. I love in-person events. I love jewellery. And I remember that as the clock ticked on, it slowly dawned on me: there wasn’t much that brought me joy in my business day-to-day.

The few momentous occasions were fun — watching a new collection go live on my site, hosting a periodic pop-up shop at West Elm or Pottery Barn — but the day in and day out realities of running my business felt depleting and uninspiring.

I knew I'd been feeling dissatisfied and stuck on my path as a designer, but asking myself the simple question, "What do I love about this?" showed me something important: not enough.

That day was a wake-up call, and I set about making some changes; the realization it left behind lingered: I want business — and LIFE — to feel so much better than this.

Fast-forward 2+ years to 2018, when my husband and I decided to relocate from Vancouver, Canada to Munich, Germany. I was still doubled down, trying to make my jewellery business a fit, when overnight, my life changed and my eyes were blown wide open.

Life in a new country offered an opportunity to observe the contrast between the life I had and the new one I was creating. It inspired me to dream new dreams and to think really hard about the future I wanted.

I realized I longed for a life of location independence. Being able to travel and work from anywhere or visit my family in Canada spontaneously.

I wanted more connection. To use my work to help others in deep and meaningful ways. Not to spend my days behind a computer or piece of jewelry, but to be out in the world really engaging.

I wanted even more creative freedom. Sure, I used creativity to design jewellery — but I wanted to write and think and teach in the world of ideas and untapped possibilities.

After navigating a bumpy path of soul-searching, lots of experimentation, and reflection, I ultimately decided it was time to close my jewellery business and pursue something entirely different.

The golden ticket to discovering my new calling and being able to build a business that truly works FOR me? Cultivating razor-sharp clarity in terms of my deepest desires, motivations, and what feels incredibly good.

I realized that by helping others uncover a deep level of clarity, I could also help them run their business in a way that not only looks good on the outside, but that feels amazing to inhabit.

That by focusing on the things in business and life that matter most and contribute to outcomes you truly want — and don’t just think you do — you can realize a state of being that lights you up from the inside.

This story isn’t to tell you you should close your business (though if you decide to, all the power to you). But to share that having a business that works isn’t simply enough. You deserve — and it’s fully possible — to have your business work FOR you.

 A Little More About Me…

A photo of my husband and me about to board a plane

◇ I’m a Canadian expat living in Munich with my German husband and Mexican dog. Yep, we’re quite the international bunch.

◇ When I’m not working with my clients you’ll find me hiking a mountain, sipping an oat mylk latte at a favourite cafe, or visiting a neighbouring European city.

◇ Germany isn’t the first foreign country I’ve lived in - I also spent a year soaking up the good life Down Under, in Sydney, Australia.

◇ Even though Munich is a world capital of beer, I often find myself hankering for an experimental IPA, instead of a crisp lager the city is known for - but don’t tell the Germans.

◇ My not-so-secret goal? To help others live a colourful and joyful life, filled to the brim with inspiration.
